Getting Cained?

Here’s a little poem I put together to mark she sad news that the wonderful Cains brewery is on the verge of going the way of so many other great things in this country:

Raisin Beer and Liverpool Lager will be sadly missed
I can’t think of a better way of getting Brahms and Liszt
Why is it good things are always lost or replaced
It really is a disgrace.

So it’s the end of brewing in Liverpool
Another industry we’ve no part in
Another 1,000 workers, skills and heritage thrown in the bin

The signs are all around, the warning is stark,
Liverpool will end up just another retail theme park.

Ok, so I’m a little premature, but things don’t look good.  At best it’ll be absorbed into some mega brewing corporation, at worst the brand and product will dissapear forever.

When I first moved to Wallasey I was keen to check out local products.  Of course in this day and age they are few and far between.

As a teenager drinking in Edinburgh (huh, you’d think teenagers today invented binge drinking, me and my mate used to drink 5 – 8 pints a night, 6 – 7 nights a week, don’t try this at home kids) the pubs would either sell McEwans, Tennants, Dryboroughs, or various other drinks.  If you went to Newcastle or Manchester or wherever then it was interesting to check out the local brews.  Today wherever you go you see the same bland Fosters, Carling and so on.

Cains has a bit of an unusual taste that takes a bit of getting used to if you normally drink generic crap like Fosters.  But even if you don’t like it yourself, another 1,000 people looking for work in Merseyside, and yet another industry that Merseyside has no part in, is far from good news for anyone.
